A landmark press conference was held in Moscow dedicated to the upcoming opening of the Evgeny Vakhtangov House in Vladikavkaz. The restoration of the mansion, where the great director spent 20 years of his life, Moskovsky Komsomolets devoted a series of publications. It seemed that every brick was counted and all the details were known, but only the true scale of the unprecedented project was revealed, which no theater in the history of Russia could afford.
“This is a significant event not only for Vladikavkaz, for our republic, but for the whole of Russia,” the head of North Ossetia, Sergei Menyailo, said at the beginning of the meeting via video link. “We approached the restoration with love,” a high-ranking official assured. What is the manifestation of this love?
— The theater treated the preservation of the house as carefully as possible. The roof was covered with tiles of the 19th century, the walls were completed with pre-revolutionary bricks. Windows, doors, fittings have been preserved and restored according to single samples. Menyailo also thanked for the unique artifacts preserved by the students of the great director and returned to Vladikavkaz 120 years later.
What exactly was returned and how exactly the building was restored — said Kirill Krok. First, he retold a well-known story about the theater’s tour of the Caucasus, which took place 40 years ago, when Evgeny Simonov, Vasily Lanovoy, Lyudmila Maksakova and Yulia Borisova brought the theater’s calling card to the Caucasus – the play “Princess Turandot”:
“They were taken to the house and told that Yevgeny Vakhtangov was born and raised here. At the same time, they added that according to the general plan, the house, which at that time consisted of only communal apartments, is planned to be demolished. And then, after the performance, Yulia Borisova turned to the hall where the local party leadership was sitting, with the words: “For us, the name of Vakhtangov is sacred. We do our best to keep his memory alive. I beg you not to demolish this house.”
As subsequent events showed, the speech of the People’s Artist of the USSR had its effect.
– In 2021, the theater was preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary, and the item on the restoration of the Vakhtangov House was included in the large celebration program signed by the president. When we entered the house, we saw that it was in absolutely disrepair. Vladikavkaz is located in a seismic zone, so the foundation had to be strengthened. All internal partitions were demolished, and two facades began to be restored (they were recognized as security objects. – I.V.). In one of the rooms, window blocks remembering Vakhtangov were preserved, and in the basement they found an old, half-rotted door. Yevgeny Bogrationovich could touch her.
The interiors of the House will house items donated from the Vakhtangov Theater Museum: programs written by the schoolboy Vakhtangov, photographs from his personal archive, including those that have never been exhibited anywhere, and much more. And also the mouthpiece that Yevgeny Bogrationovich smoked all his life – this exhibit was handed over by his great-granddaughter.
As Alexander Zhuravsky, deputy head of the President’s Office for Public Projects, emphasized, the Vakhtangov House will become a museum space of a new format with a large multimedia component.
The difficult process of restoring a house cannot be completed simply by cutting the red ribbon with the orchestra. So on April 30, a grandiose concert “Vakhtangov. The way home”.
— Construction of the stage will begin on April 20. More than five hundred people, 109 troupe artists, seven or eight regional ministers of culture will fly to the celebration from Moscow. 15 trucks will bring production cargo for the construction of the stage. The scenery will be two facades – a theater in Moscow and a house in Vladikavkaz, and they will look at each other. The grandiose action is accompanied by the Vladikavkaz Symphony Orchestra and the theater orchestra.
The Vakhtangovites called the upcoming event the fulfillment of the main dream of life.
“Krok didn’t give us the prize and built the Vakhtangov House for this money,” joked the People’s Artist of Russia, rector of Pike Yevgeny Knyazev. “There are no other schools in the world, except for the schools of Stanislavsky, Mikhail Chekhov and Vakhtangov,” Irina Kupchenko said in her turn. And Yulia Rutberg recalled the horror and pain that she and Knyazev experienced five years ago when visiting the house:
– Pebbles fell out of the walls before our eyes, and this is the place where his dad, mom were, the first steps were taken. “For me, this is an ordinary miracle,” Rutberg testified. And Viktor Dobronravov added that the last day of April would be the beginning of an important tour for the Vakhtangov Theater in Vladikavkaz – three performances within 10 days will be performed by artists.
What else is worth mentioning? On the 30th, at noon, a lilac, which he loved so much, will be planted around Vakhtangov’s family nest. The house will solemnly open on this day, but it will receive the first visitors on May 2.
“And what will happen next?” – I tried to find out the theater columnist “MK”. “Is there any plan to expand the Vakhtangov expansion – for example, the construction of the Vakhtangov quarter?”
“I gave myself a word to stop in construction activities, but the creative elite of the republic has an idea to make the houses that surround our house into an art quarter,” Krok supported the idea with a counter remark. “We have thoughts on this matter,” the head of the republic confirmed. So, neither April 30 nor May 2, Vakhtangov’s return to his small homeland will end. This is just the beginning.
