Uzbekistan has completely halted natural gas exports amid rising domestic consumption driven by cold weather. This was announced by the chairman of the board of the energy company Uztransgaz Bekhzot Narmatov.
“Due to the fact that now our main task is to meet the needs of the population, all gas exports, including to China, have been 100% suspended, and this volume has been directed to the population,” Mr. Narmatov said in an interview with Sevimli TV channel (quoted from “RIA News”).
The head of Uztransgaz noted that in 2022, the volume of gas exports from Uzbekistan decreased three times compared to last year. “This is also due to the fact that several new power plants have recently been built in Uzbekistan. Accordingly, we also recalculate the volume of gas exports and imports,” he added.
On November 16, following a power outage due to a lack of gas at thermal power plants, Deputy Energy Minister Sherzod Khodzhaev said that Uzbekistan had almost completely suspended gas and electricity exports to meet the needs of the population.
At the same time, the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov earlier today, December 8, informedthat the Uzbek side is not interested in participating in a “tripartite alliance” with Russia and Kazakhstan for gas supplies, is negotiating “to import gas and electricity from neighboring countries, and not through some kind of alliance or union.” According to Reutersthe minister criticized the concept of the agreement, saying that Tashkent would not agree to political terms that would jeopardize its national interests.
From the data of the State Committee on Statistics, it follows that from January to October of this year, Uzbekistan exported 4.07 billion cubic meters. m of gas for $841 million, which is almost a tenth of the total production in the country.
