US Supreme Court rejects Deripaska’s sanctions appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a petition by Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska in which he tried to appeal the sanctions imposed against him. The businessman asked the court to consider a lawsuit against US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen about going beyond the limits of authority by applying restrictions in 2018, RIA Novosti reports.

In March, the U.S. District of Columbia Court of Appeals dismissed Mr. Deripaska’s appeal against a June 2021 lower court decision to dismiss his case against the U.S. Treasury.

The US Treasury in 2018 imposed sanctions against the businessman and his companies Rusal, En+ and others. He was banned from entering the country and had his assets frozen. Americans are prohibited from doing business with Mr. Deripaska. In 2019, sanctions were lifted from the businessman’s companies after his share in them decreased. The entrepreneur estimated the damage from sanctions at $7.5 billion.

At the end of September, the Ministry of Justice accused Oleg Deripaska of circumventing sanctions. According to the department, the billionaire, through two assistants, continued to do business in the country and made a deal for $ 3 million. In addition, two years ago they allegedly organized the birth of Deripaska’s girlfriend in the States, for which they spent $ 300 thousand. The businessman faces up to 20 years in prison in the United States.
