US sues SpaceX over job discrimination

On August 24, the US Department of Justice sued Elon Musk’s SpaceX corporation, accusing its leadership of discriminating in the employment of refugees, reported on the website of the department.
“From at least September 2018 to May 2022, SpaceX regularly discouraged asylum seekers and refugees from applying and denied them employment or consideration in violation of immigration and nationality law,” the report said.
The company, according to the agency, “erroneously” claimed that the law allowed it to hire only US citizens and foreigners who legally reside in the country. An investigation since 2020 found that SpaceX failed to fairly consider or hire asylum seekers and refugees due to their status, and the company’s human resources department “actively discouraged” such applicants.
The Department of Justice also pointed out that all people who receive refugee status in the United States are thoroughly vetted by the government, so employers cannot discriminate against them when hiring. There are no regulations in the case of SpaceX that would limit the hiring of such employees, the department stressed.
With its lawsuit, the Ministry of Justice intends to achieve a fair consideration of the resumes of refugee applicants, as well as the payment of compensation to those who were denied employment for illegal reasons, allowing discrimination.
