US plans to impose a protective duty on Russian aluminum

The US authorities have been considering the possibility of imposing a duty for several months, such a step is necessary, since the Russian Federation “imported aluminum to the United States at dumping prices and harmed American companies,” the interlocutors specify. But the final decision, they said, still needs the approval of US President Joe Biden. At the same time, the White House is weighing the risks of such a measure for American industry, including aerospace and automotive, the agency notes. President Donald Trump in 2018 imposed a 10% duty on US aluminum imports for all countries except Canada and Mexico. In 2021, Washington made an exception for aluminum from the European Union, setting quotas for duty-free import of this metal (384,000 tons per year).
Vedomosti sent a request to a representative of UC Rusal, Russia’s only producer of primary aluminum and the world’s largest outside of China, and to the press service of the US presidential administration.
