United Russia Vyatkin wants to remove the Gulag Archipelago and other works from the school curriculum

Dmitry Vyatkin, First Deputy Chairman of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, believes that works that “have not stood the test of time” should be removed from school literature. Among them, he named Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago. The politician accused the writer of “sucking many facts out of his finger” and “blotting out his own homeland in the mud.”

Mr. Vyatkin, during a working trip to Rostov-on-Don, recalled the plans of the authorities to revise the school literature curriculum in 2023. In particular, according to the deputy, it is necessary to add works by Soviet authors, including “The Young Guard” by Alexander Fadeev, “Hot Snow” by Yuri Bondarev.

“Those works that have not stood the test of time, that do not correspond to reality, “gossip in the form of versions,” as Vysotsky wrote and sang, without any doubt, should be excluded from the school curriculum,” said Mr. Vyatkin (quoted from TASS).

The deputy drew attention to the fact that the legislators will not “chop off the shoulder.” The authorities will rely on the opinion of experts, parents and teachers. He himself believes that the Gulag Archipelago should be excluded from the program. “As shown by the historical analysis of the Gulag Archipelago, which has so far been removed, and I think it won’t be long in school curricula, many facts were “sucked out of thin air” by Alexander Isaevich, invented. Historians have checked all the facts. There was an attempt to get a prize for this – for the fact that he blotted out his own Motherland in the mud, ”added Mr. Vyatkin.

Nobel Prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn published The Gulag Archipelago in the 1970s in the West and in the late 1980s in the USSR. The work about repressions is based on the personal experience of the author and the stories of prisoners.
