Unilever CEO Alan Jope to step down in 2023

Today, September 26, the British manufacturer of consumer goods Unilever informedthat its CEO Alan Jope will leave his post at the end of 2023. The company said in a statement that Jope has notified the board of directors of his intention to step down. The board of directors is beginning to search for a new CEO and is going to consider candidates both from within the company and from outside.
Mister Jope headed Unilever in 2019. According to Western media, the decision to resign may be due to the fact that many of the company’s investors have recently been dissatisfied with the results of his activities. In particular, many of them criticized attempts Unilever to buy GSK’s OTC division: Unilever made an offer to do so three times last year, increasing the offer each time. Investor pressure has intensified after Trian Fund Management bought a stake in Unilever this year, and its head, activist investor Nelson Peltz, joined the company’s board of directors.
“We are primarily concerned that 15 months remain before his departure, (during which at the head of Unilever.— “b”) will be a director who appears to have lost the trust of employees and other stakeholders. And this at a time when Unilever will be undertaking a fundamental reorganization, not to mention the need to operate in a difficult macroeconomic environment,” said James Edwards Jones, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.
Unilever shares are up 4% this morning.
