More than 900 million tourists made international trips in 2022 – twice as many as in 2021, but 37% less than the pre-pandemic 2019 figure, follows from the report (.pdf ) World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, UN agency). UNWTO specialists note that the dynamics of the recovery of the global tourism market in 2022 exceeded the organization’s expectations.

Growth in international tourist arrivals last year was recorded in all regions of the world, with Middle East destinations showing the strongest growth (up 83% of 2019 figures). 585 million tourists arrived in European countries during the year (about 80% of the pre-pandemic level). The worst indicator was recorded in Asia due to tight anti-covid restrictions (only 23% of the four-year-old data).

Among the regions that recorded the most significant increase in tourist activity (relative to 2019): the Virgin Islands (+27%), Albania (+17%) and Honduras (+17%). Among the sub-regions: Western Europe (87% of the 2019 level) and the Caribbean (84%).

In January 2023, China, one of the most popular tourist destinations in East Asia, began lifting a number of anti-COVID restrictions on international arrivals. As restrictions ease in China’s neighbors expect influx of Chinese tourists.
