Ukraine received the first Oscar in history for the film “20 days in Mariupol”

The winner of the Oscar for best documentary film was the work of Ukrainian director Mstislav Chernov “20 days in Mariupol”. During the award ceremony, the director noted that this was the first statuette in the history of Ukraine. At the ceremony, he spoke out against the Russian military operation.

The film chronicles the work of a team of Associated Press reporters in Mariupol at the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The film previously won a BAFTA Award and a Directors Guild of America Award.

Also nominated for an Oscar in this category were “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” about the Ugandan opposition leader, “Eternal Memory,” about the relationship between Chilean journalist Augusto Gongora and Chilean actress Paulina Urrutia, “Olfa’s Daughters,” about a woman whose daughters fled to Libya, to join the “Islamic State” (IS, recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation), as well as “Kill the Tiger” about the struggle of the family of a raped girl in India.
