Uber to compensate Australian taxi services $178 million for lost revenue

American taxi aggregator Uber agreed settle in court claims by Australian taxi operators who said they lost significant revenue after Uber entered the country. Under the agreement, Uber will pay a total of 272 million Australian dollars ($178 million).

The Uber class action was filed in 2019 in the Supreme Court of Victoria on behalf of approximately 8,000 taxi operators and drivers. They claimed that Uber, which came to Australia back in 2012, violated local laws because they require licenses for transportation services. Uber said it did not want to break the law and acted solely for the benefit of consumers.

In 2015, Australian authorities adjusted the law, allowing Uber to continue providing its services without obtaining licenses to drivers who cooperate with this service. At the same time, the authorities said that Uber must pay compensation to traditional taxi services. Ultimately, the American company agreed to pay compensation based on tariffs and traffic volume as of 2018.
