The United Arab Emirates plans to take advantage of the COP28 climate summit to discuss possible oil and gas deals with other countries’ delegations. This is reported, referring to documents on the preparation of the summit, BBC.
Responding to a request from journalists, the UN assured that the UAE does not intend to use the summit for its own purposes or act in a biased manner. UAE officials responsible for hosting the summit told the BBC that the country’s delegation does indeed intend to hold business negotiations with summit participants. However, the host party did not disclose the topics of the negotiations, explaining that “private meetings remain private.”
According to the documents, the UAE delegation intends to hold private meetings with representatives of 27 countries ahead of the summit, which starts on November 30. Topics include possible cooperation between state-owned ADNOC and China in the production and supply of LNG in Mozambique, Canada and Australia. The UAE delegation intends to inform 13 more countries, including Germany and Egypt, about the readiness of the Emirati oil and gas company ADNOC to cooperate with foreign governments. In addition, the UAE intends to look for business partners for Masdar, a state-owned company working with renewable energy sources.
The president of COP28 this year will be Sultan bin Ahmed al-Jaber, who is also the CEO of ADNOC and Masdar. At a press conference last month, COP28 director-general Majid al-Suwaidi said the UAE team at the climate summit was “completely independent” of both ADNOC and Masdar. Responding to a question from the BBC, UAE representatives said that Sultan al-Jaber’s combination of positions in companies with the position of president of COP28 is a well-known fact.
“Dr. Sultan Al Jaber is solely focused on COP business, achieving ambitious goals and taking climate action to a whole new level at COP28,” the statement said. Representatives of the UAE delegation added that suggestions that his work was “not aimed at taking meaningful steps in the field of climate conservation” could be described as “inconceivable”.
