Two paintings by Francisco Goya sold at auction for $16.4 million

Portraits of the Spanish artist of the XVIII-XIX centuries Francisco Goya sold for $16.42 million at an auction in New York on January 25. This was reported on the website of the auction house Christie’s. They did not say who purchased the paintings.
One portrait shows Leonora Antonia Valdes de Barruso with a fan in her hands, the second shows her daughter Maria Vicenta Barruso Valdes on a sofa with a small white dog. The paintings were commissioned by Madame de Barruso’s husband Salvador Anselmo Barruso de Barette in 1805. The family belonged to the bourgeois class, according to Christie’s website.
The last time the paintings were put up for sale was in 1951. The paintings have been in a private collection since that time.
Francisco Goya is one of the most famous artists of the Romantic era. He painted portraits, still lifes, historical and religious canvases. The largest collection of paintings by Francisco Goya is in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
