Two films related to Russia will be shown at the Venice Film Festival

Morals to match Kushchevsky will be seen at the oldest film review in Europe in the Kazakh film “Goliath”
On August 31, Noah Baumbach’s White Noise, starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, opens the 79th Venice Film Festival, founded in 1932 at the behest of Mussolini. The directorate of the oldest film festival, following the Cannes colleagues, refused this year the participation of Russian films and the reception of an official delegation from our country. The ban did not apply to independent paintings, but nonetheless there are none.
The contestants are: “The Ant-Lord” by Gianni Amelio, “Entirely and Completely” by Luca Guadagnino, “Kit” by Darren Aronofsky, “Blonde” by Andrew Dominic, “Bardo” by Alejandro Iñárritu, “Tar” by Todd Field, “Son” by Florian Zeller, ” Athena” by Romain Gavras, “Argentina, 1985” by Santiago Miter, “Without Bears” by Jafar Panahi and other paintings.
The jury was headed by American actress Julianne Moore. And under her leadership, the films will be appreciated by: Japanese writer living in the UK, Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro, French director Audrey Divan, Iranian actress Leila Khatami and other filmmakers. The Golden Lions for contribution to cinema will be awarded to French star Catherine Deneuve and American director Paul Schroeder.
The new season of Lars von Trier’s Kingdom, the Copenhagen Cowboy series by Nicolas Winding Refn and many other films shot by the most famous filmmakers will be shown out of competition.
Russian speech will still be heard at the festival. The film “Goliath” by Kazakhstani director Adilkhan Yerzhanov is participating in the recently appeared program “Horizons Extra”. Russian producers took part in its creation, and among them Natalya Drozd, behind whom is “Compartment number 6”. In addition to Kazakh artists, the film starred Russian actress Alexandra Revenko, whom we have already seen in Adilkhan’s previous work Storm. “Goliath” was filmed in Russian and Kazakh languages. Its action takes place in the same mysterious village of Karatas, as in other paintings by Yerzhanov. There, a criminal type named Poshaev keeps everyone in fear. Morals in Karatas are about the same as in the infamous Kuschevka.
“Goliath explores the nature of power and the nature of submission. The idea of revenge, which at first glance is impossible, the story of the confrontation between a big man and a small one – they have been floating around for a long time. I was looking for their reflection in the plot, over the course of two years the script was rewritten several times. The film has a very thin line between art and genre, there is a risk that this balance will not be perceived, but there is also hope that it will be appreciated,” said Adilkhan Yerzhanov.
The program “Venetian Classics” will show a restored version of the film “Bro” by VGIK graduate Bakhtiyor Khudoynazarov, which he defended in the early 90s, and filmed in his homeland in Tajikistan. The film will be presented by film critic and ex-wife of the late director, who died in Berlin in 2015, Sitora Aliyeva.
