Twitter owner Elon Musk saw unfair competition in the launch of Threads

The owner of the social network Twitter, Elon Musk, commented on the possibility of a lawsuit against Meta (recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned), which launched the Threads social network. Twitter threatened Meta with a lawsuit over a new texting app, accusing it of exploiting Twitter’s trade secrets and stealing intellectual property.
“Competition is fine, unfair play is not,” Mr. Musk responded to the current situation. In a July 5 letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Alex Spiro, a lawyer representing Twitter, accused Meta of illegally exploiting Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property by hiring former Twitter employees to build the app.
“No one on the Threads development team is a former Twitter employee,” Meta spokesman Andy Stone wrote in Threads on July 6 (quoted by AP). Spiro’s letter was first reported by the Semafor website. In it, the lawyer stated that Twitter “intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights” and noted the company’s right to seek an injunction.
Some analysts believe that Meta’s new offering, billed as a text-based version of the Instagram photo-sharing app (owned by Meta, classified as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), could seriously compete with Twitter. On the other hand, the new Meta app raises questions about privacy protections. Although Threads has launched in over 100 countries, it is not available in the European Union, which has strict data privacy regulations.
