According to forecasts by the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, organized holidays in Turkey in 2024 will fall in price by a third. This is explained by the inflated cost of travel packages last year, when hoteliers took advantage of the increase in tourist flows from other countries.
According to experts, the number of tourists will decline in 2024, and many sites will remain underutilized. However, the reduction in cost applies only to early bookings, said Maya Lomidze, executive director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia: “We shouldn’t expect a sharp decline throughout the market, while early booking promotions have reduced the cost of summer holidays. In most hotels where the offer is valid, discounts are 25-30%. In general, prices in the market will most likely remain at last year’s level or increase slightly.
Nevertheless, there are facilities that are ready to reduce prices in order to ensure occupancy at the expense of Russians, but there are very few of them. Due to the high cost of 2023, there was an understanding that the pricing policy should be reconsidered.
The approximate cost of a week’s trip to a five-star hotel is 60-70 thousand rubles. per person. In previous years people were clearly wary of booking ahead, but now summer holidays are being sold very strongly. If we compare December 2022 and December 2023, the increase was more than 30%.”
In 2023, inflation in Turkey rose to 65% on an annual basis. In addition, the lira updated its historical low against the dollar. The exchange rate dropped to about 33 liras per $1. In this regard, the expenses of hoteliers have increased significantly, and they are unlikely to seriously reduce prices, said Alper Bozbash, a guide in Istanbul:
“Prices and the number of tours depend on inflation in Turkey. Nowadays air travel has become very expensive. Previously, you could buy a round-trip ticket for $300, but this year similar tickets cost $500-600.
Due to the exchange rate of the dollar and euro, hotels’ operating costs have increased, so I don’t think that tours will become cheaper. Previously, there were hotels that worked only with Russia, now they are opening other markets with which they want to compensate for the lack of tourists.”
Over the 11 months of 2023, about 47 million foreign tourists visited Turkey, including almost 6 million Russians.
