Turkey introduces 130% duties on imports of wheat, corn and barley – Kommersant

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree according to which wheat, corn and barley imported into the country will be subject to a duty of 130%. Zero duty on these goods will cease to operate from May 1. The document was published in the newsletter Resmi Gazete.
Exceptions are made for Singapore: part of the products from this country can be imported into Turkey with a duty of 16.2%. Zero duties will continue to apply for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Previously, duties on imports of grain and other agricultural products were 45% for wheat, 35% for barley and 25% for corn. However, after the pandemic in October 2020, Turkey first reduced duties, and then stopped collecting them altogether.
The Turkish authorities imposed duties on agricultural products just a month after four EU countries – Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria – suspended the import of Ukrainian grain, as the duty-free import of these products began to interfere with the economy of local farmers. Now to do distribution of surplus Ukrainian grain is planned by the UN food program. Products can begin to be exported to countries in need.
