The number of Russians who visited Japan in 2022 amounted to 10,400 people, which is 11.5 times less than in the pre-pandemic 2019 (120 thousand), reported Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) with reference to statistics from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
JNTO estimates that 3,831,900 foreign nationals entered Japan in 2022. This is eight times less than in 2019 (31 million). According to the organization, the top three in terms of entering the country are South Korea (1,012,700 people), Taiwan (331,100 people) and the United States (323,500 people).
ATOR believes that the reduction in the flow of tourists from Russia to Japan is due to the restriction on the entry of tourists and the cessation of direct flights from the Russian Federation. At the same time, the association noted that the tourist flow from Russia began to grow at the end of the year; in December, 1,600 Russians visited Japan. ATOR added that citizens of the Russian Federation have no problems with obtaining a Japanese visa now.
After the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Japanese airlines stopped flights in Russian airspace. Russian Ambassador to Japan Mikhail Galuzin declared in November, that Russia is determined to resume direct flights with Japan, but does not see the reciprocal desire of the Japanese side.
