The painting “Rest on the Flight into Egypt” by Italian artist Titian Vecellio, created in 1512, is being auctioned at Christie’s, the newspaper reported. The Times. The estimated cost of the painting is $31 million. The painting was put up for sale for the first time in 150 years.

As noted at the auction house, Titian was just over 20 years old when he created “Rest on the Flight into Egypt.” Among its owners were the Scottish first Duke of Hamilton, Queen Consort of Saxony Maria Theresa of Austria, Emperor Napoleon I. Later, it was repeatedly acquired by collectors.

In January 1995, the canvas was stolen by unknown persons from the Longleat manor house, where a British aristocrat lived at that time. The painting was found in 2002 at a bus stop in southwest London, wrapped in a plastic bag.
