Billionaire Gennady Timchenko appealed to the second instance of the European Court of Justice, in which he demands that European sanctions be lifted from him. This was reported by Bloomberg. The businessman’s defense argues that “close ties” with President Vladimir Putin do not make him an ally in military operations in Ukraine.

“The businessman’s close ties with the Russian leader do not make him an ally in military operations in Ukraine,” Stefan Bonifassi, the businessman’s lawyer, said in court.

In an appeal, Gennady Timchenko and his wife said that the EU sanctions imposed were not justified. “Despite the fact that Gennady Timchenko has indeed known Mr. Putin for a long time, it is impossible to call him a confidant. We dispute this fact, since such a statement contains a kind of accusation,” the lawyer said in the EU court.

Gennady Timchenko came under EU sanctions on February 28, 2022, and in June challenged court restrictions. The billionaire was banned from entering the EU countries and his assets were frozen. In March, in the port of San Remo, the Italian authorities arrested the yacht Lena, the owner of which was called Gennady Timchenko by the media. In April, the Finnish government seized his €10 million stake in the Helsinki Hall Ice Palace.
