Fans of Japanese cartoons My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service and other films from the legendary Studio Ghibli will add a new destination to their travel list later this year, writes CNN.
Park Ghibli, opening November 1 in Japan, will be a theme park dream for anyone who has ever watched the studio’s beautiful and often surreal animated films and wanted to step into the worlds they create.
Ghibli is replete with themes of nature, friendship, strong female characters, aircraft, fate and courage. Their aesthetic is naturalism, spiced with their own signature formula of magical realism.
Ghibli Park is located in the Aichi Earth Expo Memorial Park, less than two hours by train from Kyoto. When completed, the theme park will cover approximately 17.5 acres. (One acre is about the size of a football field.)
When it opens in November, three of the five planned spaces will be completed. Chief among these is the Ghibli Grand Warehouse, an indoor facility that will house artifacts and exhibits from the films, including the robot soldier from Castle in the Sky, the cat bus from Totoro, and another game from The Secret World of Arrietty.
The second area, Hill of Youth, contains the antique shop from Whisper of the Heart and another game from Return of the Cat. And the third is Dondoko Forest with a complete recreation of Satsuki and Mei’s house from My Neighbor Totoro and a Totoro-themed playground.
