Greek shipping companies Minerva Marine, Thenamaris and TMS Tankers have stopped transporting Russian oil in recent weeks, reports Reuters citing industry sources and ship data. The agency notes that the refusal by Greek shippers followed tightening US sanctions on Russian oil supplies.

Reuters writes that these three companies were active shippers of oil and fuel from Russia until September-October. After this, they began to reduce their participation in transportation. When contacted by the agency, Thenamaris said it does not comment on commercial matters. Minerva Marine and TMS Tankers did not respond to requests for comment.

The agency notes that Minerva Marine, Thenamaris and TMS Tankers have been transporting Russian oil for decades. They continued to transport oil from Russia even after the refusal of most other Western companies due to growing sanctions risks, Reuters notes.

Three Greek companies operate more than 100 tankers capable of transporting almost the entire volume of oil exported from the Russian ports of Primorsk, Ust-Luga and Novorossiysk, amounting to about 10 million tons per month or 2.4 million barrels per day, the agency notes.

The G7 countries, the European Union and Australia introduced restrictions on oil prices from Russia in December 2022. They also banned their companies from transporting Russian oil if it sells above their $60 per barrel ceiling.

November 16 USA introduced sanctions against three Liberian-flagged oil tankers – Kazan, Ligovsky Prospect and NS Century. The US Treasury said that all three tankers were carrying Russian oil at a price above the established ceiling. Also included in the sanctions list were 20 companies from Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the UAE, and North Macedonia.
