The first show without a master was held in Dubai
Valentin Yudashkin did not live just a few months before his sixtieth birthday, so the documentary film dedicated to the designer’s anniversary did not give the impression of greetings from the distant past. All this happened quite recently, but as if in a different era.
There were often cameras next to the designer, and there was quite a lot of material about Valentin Abramovich. Add to this speakers ranging from family to A-listers, and the film becomes more than meaningful. Not intended to be a deep dive, a little too glossy in places, but still educational. First of all, regarding the behind the scenes.
Here Valentin Yudashkin talks about the first shows for work collectives. Nine in the morning, a cold cultural center, women ready to go to a coal mine for their shift, hand embroidery on a creaking stage and a bride’s dress at the end of the fashion show… It’s unlikely that the spectators of that show later had the chance to dress in something similar, but for them it was a real theater.
Not much time passes, and Yudashkin with his Russian style is already the subject of a stir in Paris and a designer who is needed by all the stars in Russia. Ilze Liepa dances in his ballet costumes, Philip Kirkorov sparkles in front of the audience in silks and sequins. Yudashkin himself seemed to have not changed at all, unlike the scenery. Instead of modest Soviet interiors, there is the classic chic of a house in Bakovka and a fashion house named after him, immersed in luxurious fabrics.
But the designer says about the same thing. A strict calendar of shows, each collection from scratch, no hits from the nineties, like his star clients. The crisis of 1998 flashes by, when it was necessary to sell ideas without copyright in order to save the business, and a difficult relationship with the Parisian fashion syndicate. But all this with a wide smile and on the run. He was always in a hurry to get somewhere.
The first show without a designer (it took place shortly before Valentin Abramovich’s sixtieth birthday) collected an archive of wedding dresses, and the fashion show itself, led by Galina Yudashkina, took place in Dubai. Everything is logical, business feels better where there is stability and money. And this seems to be the beginning of not the most joyful era. No new Yudashkins on the horizon, no Parisian prospects. Even bets on the native outback are no longer so profitable.
URGENTLY NEED TO GO TO THE SUPERMARKET
There are many series about the life of trade workers in the world, but here this genre is far from being on an industrial footing. “Galya, we have a cancellation!” clearly made according to the patterns of “Kitchen”, but the chances of triumph are still difficult to predict.
There’s not much that’s required of sitcoms. Clear characters, jokes in every scene, a taste of romance and sentimentality. Next is the lottery: it’s either hit or miss, mediocre results don’t count.
Nastasya Samburskaya and Maxim Lagashkin are here as star locomotives. Their functions are clear. Samburskaya brings the image of a spectacular bitch to the absolute level, Lagashkin improves (although, it would seem, there is nowhere further) in the role of a boorish boss who does not miss a skirt or a glass. It must be admitted that both Nastasya and Maxim can do much more, but the sitcom is not exactly a genre that requires a large catalog of acting abilities. And this is a kind of trap.
Sitcom hugs are unlikely to stifle an acting career, but they can likely make them more predictable. Especially if the comedy suddenly becomes popular and lasts for more than a couple of seasons. Then try to fight with titles like “dude from “Kitchen”, it’s not so easy.
However, you can probably play jokes until retirement. Moreover, some of them are actually funny.
