The film “Goliath” with Russian participation received an award from independent critics
The main award of the 79th Venice Film Festival “Golden Lion”, awarded for the best film, went to the only documentary film in the competition “All Beauty and Bloodshed”. It was directed by Oscar winner for Citizenfour: The Truth of Snowden, Laura Poitras. The jury, led by American actress Julianne Moore, rendered a skillful verdict, noting mostly decent cinema and not ignoring the current agenda.
This is not the first time a non-fiction film has won the Golden Lion. She is a brave woman, just like her heroine Nan Goldin, a well-known photographer, an LGBT activist who became famous for her textured, like a painting, candid shots that captured New York bohemia, liberated men and women, herself with bruises after beatings inflicted by a loved one. One of her most famous photo cycles is “The Ballad of Sexual Addiction”. In Laura Poitras’ film, Nan Goldin fearlessly takes on the pharmaceutical tycoons, the Sackler family, who produce an addictive pain reliever. Nan herself became his victim.
The Grand Prix of the festival and the award for the debut of Luigi de Laurentiis “The Lion of the Future” received for “Saint-Omer” a native of Senegal, Alice Diop. She is also a documentary filmmaker and made feature films for the first time. Diop enjoyed some incredible attention: because a woman – one, a dark-skinned one – two. She has been living in France for a long time, and her mother stayed in Senegal. In her painting, Diop tried to tell a universal story about the lives of her compatriots, based on a real story that shocked her. For almost the entire film, we are present in real time at the court session, where the case of a student from Senegal is being considered, who left her one-year-old daughter on the beach and actually killed the child. There was no other way for her to get rid of him. A screenwriter and writer with Senegalese roots, but born in France, comes to court, and this is a completely different story. She meets with the mother of the defendant, trying to understand the psychological aspects of what happened. The picture is well done, but too detailed. Not every viewer was able to watch it to the end. Diop herself talks about the fine line that separates documentary and feature films.
The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Italian director Luca Guadagnino, who made his first film in the United States. His horror “Entirely and Completely” tells about young cannibal lovers. The main roles were played by Timothy Chalamet, who shocked the audience with a silk women’s jumpsuit and a bare back, and Taylor Russell. She received the award as a young actress. Marcello Mastroianni. Her heroine is looking for her father to understand her addiction to human meat.
Volpi Cups for acting went to Colin Farrell for a magnificent and some kind of desperate job – the role of an Irish country guy living on a remote island in the same room with his sister and a donkey in Martin McDonagh’s Banshee of Inisherin (the director himself was awarded the award for best screenplay based on in her play of the same name) and Cate Blanchett, who played the conductor of the Berlin Orchestra in Todd Field’s Tar. The heroine has no prototype, and the story is entirely fictional. Blanchett in 2007 already received the Volpi Cup for the painting “I’m Not There”.
The special prize was awarded to the film “Without Bears” by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who is in prison. In support of him and two other imprisoned directors from Iran, a flash mob was staged on the red carpet before the premiere, the participants of which came out with portraits of inmates for political reasons. There have been many similar actions over the years, and the most spectacular one was at the Berlinale, when a suitably designed truck drove around the city. But the Iranian authorities do not react to this in any way. Panahi both sat and sits – sometimes in prison, sometimes under house arrest. At the same time, he manages to shoot a movie and send it to world festivals by roundabout paths. At home, he is forbidden to engage in professional activities.
The only film created with the participation of Russia – “Goliath” by Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov – participated in the “New Horizons” program and received the Bisato d’oro independent critics award for the acting duet. Berik Aitzhanov played the poor man Arzu, who went through one of the modern wars, shell-shocked, almost does not speak, does not hear anything, but shoots accurately and after the death of his wife raises his little daughter alone. Daniyar Alshinov starred in the role of crime boss Poshaev, who keeps the whole city in fear, while standing up for justice and believes that strength is in truth. In their duet, Adilkhan Yerzhanov explores the nature of power and submission.
