The volume of global passenger air traffic at the end of 2023 increased by 36.9% compared to 2022, follows from data International Air Transport Association (IATA).
As noted in the association’s press release, international air travel grew by 41.6%, domestic air traffic by 30.4%. Compared to pre-Covid 2019, the volume of global passenger traffic decreased by 5.9%, international – by 11.4%, domestic – increased by 3.9%.
Last December, global air passenger traffic rose by 25.3% year-on-year, international by 24.2%, and domestic by 27%. The largest increase in passenger traffic in December was observed in the Asia-Pacific region (+60.7%).
Earlier, IATA reported that the global aviation industry in 2023 will finally recovered from the consequences of the pandemic and was able to turn a profit for the first time since 2019. Russian airlines are recovering much more slowly: by the end of 2023, they should carry 20% fewer passengers than in the record year of 2019, which authorities expect to reach only by 2030. Experts consider both the global and Russian forecasts to be overly optimistic: in the Russian Federation this is unlikely due to the aging fleet and sanctions, and in Europe, from 2026, emissions taxes and inflation may slow down transportation.
