The volume of e-commerce sales in Russia in 2023 increased by almost 30% compared to last year and reached 7.4 trillion rubles. This assessment was given by the head of the department for work with warehouse and industrial premises of IBC Real Estate (ex. JLL) Evgeny Bumagin at the conference “Warehouses and e-com“, organized by the Kommersant Publishing House. According to him, the share of online sales amounted to 19% of retail trade turnover at the end of the year.

Speaking about the structure of online retail, the share of universal marketplaces (Wildberries, Ozon, Yandex Market, Aliexpress Russia) in the total volume of purchases was 58%, household appliances and electronics accounted for 12%, food products – 10%, DIY – 5% , pharma – 4%, fashion – 3%.

The expert noted that one of the important trends in market development is the consolidation of online trading in the Russian Federation on the two largest marketplaces. At the end of the year, 53% of the total online sales and 75% of all orders came from Ozon and Wildberries. Other trends in the e-commerce market include an increase in the total number of orders (4.6 billion orders) and a decrease in the average purchase price (RUB 1,608).

As Kommersant previously wrote, the authorities intend to regulate the development of large online platforms. The Federation Council has developed a bill limiting the owners of online platforms whose share in online sales is above 25%. The document assumes that they will not be able to open new logistics infrastructure facilities, including order delivery points, or acquire shares in any companies, regardless of their form of ownership. Transactions made in violation of such requirements will be considered void, and the owner of the marketplace will be punished with a fine.
