The US dollar remains the most popular currency in the world in 2022, with total foreign exchange trading volumes reaching a record $7.5 trillion per day. This is evidenced by the results of the April study. Bank for International Settlements (BIS), published every three years.
According to the report, the volume of foreign exchange trading in April this year reached a record $7.5 trillion per day and increased by 14% compared to 2019.
The five most popular currencies at the auction according to the study:
- US dollar – 88% (percentage of participation as one of the parties to the trading pair.— “b”);
- euro – 32%;
- pound sterling – 17%;
- yen – 13%;
- yuan – 7%.
Operations with the ruble were not included in the study. Three years ago, their share was less than 1%.
50% of global trading was in currency swaps, about 28% in spot trading, and forward contracts accounted for 15% of the market.
Most of the total volume of foreign exchange trading – about 78% – belongs to the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. At the same time, London’s position as a center for currency trading has weakened. Its share in world turnover decreased from 43% to 38%.
