The filming of the reality show “Vikings of the North”, scheduled for September, is being prepared in Monchegorsk in advance. For this, the scenery of a medieval village is being built, which will be used already in August during the fifth festival of northern culture in the Kola Arctic, popularly called the Viking Fest.
A modern person will be able to feel like a hero of the distant past and join an unfamiliar culture. Vikings have a special attraction. Cinematographers, including those in Russia, constantly turn to their history. Any find associated with the Vikings is accompanied by a public outcry. In the spring, Norwegian scientists from the University of Stavanger announced the discovery, using radio waves, of the remains of a ship from the early Viking Age in the Salhugen burial mound. The excavations will last until the end of 2023. It is assumed that it is in those places that one should look for the origins of the Vikings. In Monchegorsk, they believe that it is impossible to hold a Viking festival and film a reality show on this topic in any other city, only here.
Other stylized Viking settlements are being erected on the territory of Russia – near Kaliningrad and Vyborg. Large-scale reconstructions of historical events are arranged there. For the festival in Monchegorsk, a platform is being built in the spirit of a medieval settlement, where you can see the performances of skalds – Old Norse poets, play the harp, learn the skills of ancient crafts, taste medieval food, take part in Thor games, participate in battles with stylized weapons, visit a medieval marketplace and set sail on Lake Imandra. The construction of a seer’s hut is being developed, where you can tell fortunes on runes (this is a system of symbols in divination). The actors are preparing an immersive show “Nordic Immersion”. It is still unknown what exactly, how and by whom will be filmed, how and where it will be possible to see the modern likeness of bygone times.
