The House of Representatives of the US Congress supported a bill introducing a ban on the sale of oil from the country’s strategic reserve to China. 331 congressmen voted for the adoption of the bill, 97 opposed. The Hill writes that the Senate is unlikely to support the initiative.
The proposed law would ban the sale of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to entities “under the control, ownership, or influence of the Chinese Communist Party.” An exception is provided for cases when this oil will not be exported to China.
The document was developed at the initiative of the Republican Party, which received a majority in the House of Representatives. All 97 votes against were from representatives of the Democratic Party, although another 113 Democrats supported the project. The US Senate is controlled by the Democrats.
At the end of December 2022, the US strategic oil reserve decreased to a minimum since 1983 – its reserves reached 378.6 million barrels. In January, the US authorities also began building up a strategic uranium reserve in an attempt to cut supplies from Russia. The Ministry of Energy of the country signed contracts for the purchase of 800 thousand pounds of uranium from local mines, as well as a state contract for $14 million with the only conversion plant for processing raw materials.
