US Department of Justice and 16 state authorities filed a lawsuit against Apple for numerous and systematic violations of the country’s antitrust laws.
As noted in the release of the Ministry of Justice, Apple violated US antitrust laws and continues to do so in several ways. For example, the company is preventing the growth of feature-rich apps (super apps) that would make it easier for consumers to switch between competing smartphone platforms. In addition, the company is blocking cloud streaming services that would allow users to avoid spending on expensive devices in order to access demanding mobile games and other cloud applications. The Ministry of Justice also accuses Apple of refusing to open access to its own messaging service for users of non-iOS devices and preventing the creation of cross-platform payment applications.
The lawsuit notes that Apple’s illegal conduct extends beyond these examples and affects web browsers, video communications, news subscriptions, entertainment, automotive services, advertising, location services and more.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit follows an investigation launched into Apple back in 2019 by the Donald Trump administration. This is the third lawsuit by the Ministry of Justice against the company over the past 14 years related to violations of antitrust laws. The last time the US Department of Justice sued Apple was in 2012. Then the lawsuit was related to increased prices for digital books. According to the court decision, Apple had to pay compensation in the amount of $450 million.
Apple has already stated that it considers the lawsuit to be unfounded and intends to defend its innocence in court.
