The White House has asked South Korea to ask chip makers not to fill the shortage in the Chinese market if it imposes an embargo on the supply of US Micron products, sources said. According to the sources of the British newspaper, US officials asked the South Koreans to turn to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix so that they do not increase sales to China. As the FT notes, this is the first known case of the US “asking an ally to enlist its companies to play a role.”

The South Korean Embassy and Samsung did not respond to requests for comment. SK Hynix said it has not received inquiries from Seoul authorities. Micron declined to comment. The White House, commenting on the newspaper, only said that Washington and Seoul have made “historic progress” in deepening cooperation on national and economic security, including efforts to protect “advanced technologies.”

The Chinese regulator intends to test Micron products shipped to China for hidden national security threats, given that the American company’s technology is used in China’s “critical” telecommunications infrastructure.
