The Union of Writers of Ukraine called for the closure of the Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv

The National Union of Writers of Ukraine called for the closure of the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv, where the writer spent his youth. He later described this house on Andreevsky Spusk in The White Guard and Days of the Turbins. Actually, the Bulgakov Literary and Memorial Museum, opened in 1989, is more often called the “Turbin House” – because of the article of the same name by the writer Viktor Nekrasov in the Novy Mir magazine, where he describes this place. Ukrainian writers believe that Bulgakov “violently hated” and denigrated Ukraine. A statement appeared on the Union’s website proposing to close the museum.

The museum, once considered one of the best in Kyiv and enjoying great popularity, is called to be cleansed of the spirit of Bulgakov. And instead of him, “settle” there the memory of the Ukrainian composer Alexander Koshyts. Exhibits related to Bulgakov and his heroes, who also “lived” in this house, are going to be transferred to the National Museum of Literature. Out of sight, out of mind.

Ukrainian writers are sure that Bulgakov was the “ideologist of the Russian world”, so now he has no place in Kyiv. Oleksandr Koshitsa, a graduate of the Kyiv Theological Academy and the author of spiritual choral music, on the contrary, promoted the Ukrainian song, however, in Canada, where he emigrated after the revolution. He lived in the house on Andreevsky until 1906. Just when the composer left this place, the Bulgakov family settled there and lived for almost 15 years.

In Kyiv, the “cleansing of Russian culture” is in full swing: 95 streets, lanes and squares of the Ukrainian capital have already been renamed, the names of which were associated with Russia and Soviet history. Now the legendary “House of Turbins” can also fall under the knife.
