The Tretyakov Gallery insisted on criminal prosecution of a 64-year-old security guard at the Yeltsin Center, who during the exhibition drew eyes with a ballpoint pen on the figures in the painting “Three Figures” by Kazimir Malevich’s student Anna Leporskaya. How informs “Rise”, the general director of the Tretyakov Gallery, Zelfira Tregulova, said she did not “consider it possible to apply to the judge” with a request to dismiss the case, “taking into account the circumstances”, “damage to the picture” and “a high degree of public outcry.”

How notes “66.ru”, the lawyer of the accused under the criminal article “Vandalism” Alexei Bashmakov called the motives of the head of the Tretyakov Gallery “strange”, noting that the insurance company fully paid the damage to the gallery. It was also reported that the painting was completely restored.

On Friday, the district court of Yekaterinburg held a hearing in the case of the accused Alexander Vasiliev. How transmits “E1.ru”, the judge at the trial said that “there is no evidence that Vasiliev tried to repair the damage” and “make amends to the Tretyakov Gallery.”

The court also refused to allow the defense to consider the case in absentia, which means that the defendant will have to attend all meetings, as well as in a simplified procedure for considering the case – without examining all the evidence, but with a lighter sentence. The defendant’s lawyer told journalists that in his practice, the courts in such cases granted the relevant petitions.

“That once again makes me think that it was a show trial, a show flogging,” the lawyer added.

The lawyer also said that the materials of the criminal case include his client’s apologies to the gallery, but the Tretyakov Gallery “refused to get acquainted with them, she formally did not receive them.” In addition, the defender stated that although the gallery did not file a claim for damages, the defendant pensioner “could donate some amount.”

Under the article on vandalism, Vasiliev faces up to three months of arrest or a fine of 40,000 rubles.
