The State Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of literature and art for 2022 was awarded to a team of restorers from the Tretyakov Gallery for their work on Ilya Repin’s painting “Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan.” Vladimir Tolstoy, Advisor to the President of Russia for Culture, announced this during a press conference.
The State Prize is the highest recognition of the merits of scientists and cultural figures before society and the state. In addition to a monetary reward of 10 million rubles. laureates receive a diploma, a badge of honor, and a tailcoat badge. It is awarded annually on June 12, the Day of Russia.
Repin’s painting was damaged on May 25, 2018. A gallery visitor, 37-year-old engineer from the Voronezh region, Igor Podporin, hit the painting with a metal fence post. In April 2019, he was sentenced by a court to two and a half years in prison. The canvas was restored for four years. The first showing of the restored painting was held on May 23, 2022 at a press conference, after which the artist’s work was moved to storage. Last summer for a picture ordered bulletproof capsule.
