The Sturgeon Breeders Union announced the massive sale of illegal black caviar from China

In Russia, Chinese sturgeon caviar is being sold en masse under the guise of Russian, said Alexander Novikov, president of the Sturgeon Breeders’ Union. According to him, the share of illegal Chinese black caviar on the Russian market is now estimated at about 40%.
As told “Izvestia” Mr. Novikov, last year alone, 18.5 tons of sturgeon caviar were officially imported into Russia from China. However, all these products were relabeled and sold not as Chinese, but as Russian.
The President of the Sturgeon Breeders Union claims that in addition to official supplies, smuggled caviar from China is also imported into Russia, the volume of which is 1.5–2 times the legal volume. At the same time, the cost of legal Chinese caviar is estimated at $200, and illegal – at $100.
To control the supply of red and black caviar, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved mandatory electronic labeling, which will allow tracking its path from the manufacturer to the final buyer. The requirement will come into force on April 1, 2024. Now caviar is marked voluntarily.
