But then the tragic events began to develop fatally quickly. At the end of last year, Beck contracted bacterial meningitis and, despite the best efforts of doctors, could not overcome the disease.
It is reported that Johnny Depp visited a friend in the hospital a few days before his death and everyone hoped for the best. Perhaps that is why the news of the death of the musician was for Depp, according to people from his inner circle, truly devastating. The famous actor in an interview recalled that he met Beck and his wife Sandra at a very difficult moment in his life and communication with the rock legend helped him stay sane.
Other associates of Jeff Beck also expressed their gratitude to the musician. In the sixties, after a short stay in The Yardbirds and being fired from it for perfectionism and tediousness, Beck formed his own band, The Jeff Beck Group, where he invited the then little-known Rod Stewart as the vocalist, and the future Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood became the bass player. Both stars remember Beck with great affection.
“Jeff was like from another planet. One of the few guitarists who, playing on stage, listened to my singing and seemed to answer me. Jeff, you are the greatest. Thank you for everything…” Rod Stewart wrote on his social account.
“Now that Jeff is gone, I feel like one of my band brothers has left this world. I will miss you very much,” said Ronnie Wood.
“With the death of Jeff, we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitarists in the world,” added Mick Jagger.
Perhaps after Beck there were no hits that could be associated only with him, and the spontaneous building of a career deprived the musician of the well-deserved fame that Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page has. Nevertheless, it was thanks to Jeff Beck and his experiments with sound distortion that the guitar received a special role in rock music.
In his short time at The Yardbirds, Beck managed to shake up what used to be considered rock and open the doors to psychedelia. On the album Truth, recorded by The Jaff Beck Group, the musician formulated what would later be referred to as heavy metal. Beck’s game lacks logic, but there is an incredible combination of subtle melodies and the power of a dive bomber.
In 2010, Jeff Beck gave a guitar master class in Moscow, and then gave a concert. And everyone who saw Beck on stage probably had the feeling that one person is holding an incredible amount of sound in his hands. This, most likely, will be remembered by Jeff Beck. Innovator and legend.
