The son of the former Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Kamilov became the beneficial owner of UMMC

The 2022 report of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC) lists Daniyar Kamilov, the son of the former foreign minister of Uzbekistan, as the beneficial owner. Mr. Kamilov is also now a shareholder of Kuzbassrazrezugol and Russia’s largest commuter rail carrier, the Central Suburban Passenger Company, found out Forbes.

In March 2022, a message was published on the UMMC website, according to which changes were planned in the corporate structure of the company. “Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company announces changes in the corporate structure. I. K. Makhmudov and A. R. Bokarev ceased to be the controlling beneficiaries of UMMC OJSC, Kuzbassrazrezugol Management Company JSC, Vostochny Port JSC, Rosterminalugol JSC, and also withdrew from the boards of directors of these companies,— says in message.

A month after the publication, Iskander Makhmudov and Andrey Bokarev were included in the UK sanctions list. In July 2022, Andrey Kozitsyn left the post of UMMC CEO. It was clarified that this decision was made “in connection with the possible imposition of personal sanctions by foreign states in the future and is aimed at eliminating the possible indirect application of sanctions against the companies of the UMMC group.” At the end of July 2022, Mr. Kozitsyn was also included in the EU sanctions list.

Daniyar Kamilov is the son of former Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov and a former top manager of Gazprombank. In 2022, Kamilov Sr. was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Security Council under the President of Uzbekistan. In 2018, “Kommersant” wrotethat persons associated with Daniyar Kamilov can receive shares in the largest coal mining enterprise in the republic, JSC Uzbekugol, for management. The company produces about 4 million tons of coal annually. In February 2022, one of the companies owned by Mr. Kamilov acquired the largest distillery in Uzbekistan.
