The story of the sitcom revolves around the eccentric country doctor Harry Wenderspiegel. To all his neighbors, he’s just a gruff but generally harmless weirdo who lives as a recluse in his lake house near the small town of Patience, Colorado.

Few people know that in fact, Harry’s personality is just a mask behind which hides a representative of an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. He flew to our planet to destroy all the people who, according to the rulers of the galaxy, have become too prolific over the past few hundred years. However, the device that should wipe humanity into powder has failed. Now Harry must somehow fix the alien apparatus, destroy the Earth, while not betraying himself to annoying locals and earthly intelligence agencies.

Most viewers fell in love with the series thanks to a whole scattering of colorful characters that inhabit Patience. There is a gruff barmaid who also loves extreme sports, and a wise old Indian who owns the city’s main eatery, and a shy mayor who suffers from problems with his wife. All of them are very bright characters, but in addition, each has a personal drama that they hide from others. All their inner demons will have to be dealt with by our alien.

The series is based on the 2012 comic book Resident Alien (the original name of the show is the same). Of course, in the adaptation, this story has undergone some changes. The original was much darker, the characters were rougher and more caricatured, and overall the comic was far less oriented toward a family audience.

According to series writer Chris Sheridan, he fell in love with Harry’s story almost immediately: “I read the comic, fell in love with him and immediately knew that you can work with him. In our time, it is rare to find good material for a comedy of characters, but this book was simply full of a wide variety of characters who called me to write a script based on them.

Interestingly, this series has been in the making for almost 10 years! The authors of the comics initially saw great potential in their creation to become a film or series. For many years they went from studio to studio, but everywhere they were refused. Even when the big Hollywood producers decided to take the idea to work, due to the lack of a clear vision, the project was stuck in production hell, from which it could not get out for a long time.

Finally, in January 2021, after years of work, the first series was released. At the moment, the series consists of incomplete 2 seasons, since the second was divided into two parts. The second half of the season’s episodes began airing on August 12.

Actors of the series “The Messenger from Space”

The main star of the show, of course, is the performer of the role of Harry, Alan Tudyk. And the point is not at all that he got the central role, but that Alan seems to be the ideal actor for the comedy genre. According to all the reviews of grateful viewers, it is the actor’s magnificent, full of sarcasm and funny facial expressions that is one of the main decorations of this show. Tudyk himself is sure that the reason for the success of “The Messenger from Space” lies in the fact that all the significant characters in it are full-fledged individuals who are very interesting to watch: “From the very beginning, I realized that this is a series that takes place in the city , full of colorful characters that you want to know as much as possible about. The alien is, of course, interesting, but in this context it simply accelerates the action, and does not work as its basis. ”

The actor became famous back in the early 2000s thanks to the TV series Firefly, but before The Messenger from Space he appeared mainly in supporting roles. However, what he makes up for in the size of his roles is the quality and quantity of his roles, because Tudyk is a real fan of his craft: “I’m a crazy actor in terms of how much I adore acting. I studied to be a theater actor, so I know many acting techniques. I really like my job.”

In addition to Alan, in the series you can see Sarah Tomko, whom many may know from the Once Upon a Time show, Corey Reynolds, the star of the Bloodhound series, Alice Wetterlund from Silicon Valley and many others. And in several episodes, Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man in the Marvel films, even appeared in “The Messenger of Their Space”.

Will the series have a sequel?

In a recent interview, “Spiderman from Space” showrunner Chris Sheridan hinted that the series could get a 3rd season and beyond in the future. When asked if he plans to continue Harry’s story after the end of this season, Sheridan replied: “I think the show will be with us for a while longer.” Therefore, it is quite possible that soon we will hear news about the next seasons.

At the same time, he added that, in his opinion, any series should not abuse the audience’s hospitality. This could probably mean that the show won’t last for many years.
