How the project was changed to suit cultural characteristics
The series “Major” can be called a project with an incredibly successful international destiny for a Russian film. Adaptations of “Major” have already been released in forty countries, including Korea, where the premiere took place quite recently. This is probably the most exotic version of the local series, which, of course, has its own characteristics.
The fashion for Korean cinema opened up quite big opportunities for the series Flex X Cop (“Chaebol vs. Detective”), and the project ended up streaming on Disney+. In general, the creators of the South Korean series adhered to the plot of “Major,” but the ten-year difference between the projects, as expected, introduced new signs of the times, such as the boom of social networks.
The term “chaebol” in Korea refers to a member of a family that owns a large business. The main character of “Chaebol vs. Detective,” like our major, grows up in the family of a businessman with political ambitions, but is his adopted son and a source of all sorts of problems. Unlike the character of Pavel Priluchny, the Korean chaebol does not just hang out in nightclubs and drive a cool car. In semi-underground paintball battles, he plays the role of a policeman, so being a law enforcement officer is more of a role-playing game for him.
After a street conflict with an armed hooligan (he unexpectedly turned out to be a murderer, whom they had been searching for for a long time and unsuccessfully), the chaebol ends up behind bars, but the ensuing scandal threatens to destroy his father’s image, and they decide to pass off the guy as an undercover agent who was carrying out a dangerous mission.
Like the major, whom his father sent to work in the police, the chaebol begins service in law enforcement, where he falls under the tutelage of a female officer. Our major’s colleagues kept puncturing his car tires. In Korea, the attitude towards wealth is different, so the new employee is greeted quite lavishly, but the chaebol’s partner also can’t stand big kids, for which she has her own reasons.
The life of our Karina Rodionova, the mentor of the hero Priluchny, is not shown in the most detail at first. In the South Korean project, based on the cultural traditions of the country, the family of a potential chaebol girl is given much more attention. And of course, the specifics of police cases and the methods of their investigation, to put it mildly, differ from Russian ones.
The main role of chaebol major Jin Yi Soo was played by Korean actor Ahn Bohyun. Local Korean film buffs probably know him from My Name/For Revenge and Itaewon Class. Ahn Bo-hyun’s colleague is played by Lee Kang-hyun.
