The series “Dreamcatcher”: an oppressive atmosphere as sleeping pills

Mystical detective criticized for slurred plot
Fresh detective stories are a very scarce commodity in the serial market. It seems that everything has already been filmed, and each new detective from the very first frames seems already familiar. Mixing investigations and mysticism, the creators of “Dreamcatcher” entered the territory where, it would seem, everything has been trampled down for a long time. They probably thought they had an ace up their sleeve.
Director Ivan Shurkhovetsky is a specialist in the historical battle genre: he filmed Janissaries, and is also one of the creators of The Legend of Kolovrat. With the help of screenwriters Yuri Stukalin and Igor Ter-Karapetov, who are much more experienced in detective affairs, he apparently really wanted to realize himself in a different genre, although the plot scheme of Dreamcatcher was very predictable.
A successful metropolitan restaurateur is suspected of murdering a man who seems to be related to the disappearance of his father more than twenty years ago. The restaurateur became involved in this story thanks to the ability to see future crimes in a dream. The charges are eventually dropped, but the visions become clearer and the corpses multiply exponentially. In an attempt to figure out what is happening, the restaurateur helps the police and shows interest not only in the mysterious murders, obviously related to the disappearance of his father, but also in the investigator, who does not have a personal life.
It is noteworthy that two American films have already been released under the name “Dreamcatcher”, and one of them is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. They have more horror than a detective, but the extra associations obviously do not help the series. Dreamed crimes were also invented by screenwriters a long time ago, they became the basis of the plot for an impressive number of projects, and this is another reason for deja vu.
However, for the series, which is on the federal air in the evening, “Dreamcatcher” looks in many ways unusual. Marina Andreeva and Pyotr Rykov, who played the investigator and the restaurateur, of course, look like a couple that would look great in the gossip column of gloss. The characters are mostly surrounded by exemplary interiors, and in general, one of the tasks of the directors, it seems, was to make it beautiful.
Beauty now and then freezes in the frame. First of all, because all the characters speak little and constantly endure long theatrical pauses. The oppressive atmosphere is probably appropriate for a plot with a mystical background, but within the framework of a detective story, it acts like a sleeping pill.
If you watch the series in an uncomfortable chair and thus protect yourself from the possibility of dozing off, then it doesn’t get any more interesting either. New characters appear in each episode, but most of them only manage to say a few words before they are shot, strangled, poisoned, or run over by car. And then the investigators, pausing, will begin to find out why this is not a suicide, although it looks very similar.
There are many films and series that leave the audience with a feeling of complete misunderstanding of what is happening. Sometimes it even gives the audience some excitement. But in the “Dreamcatcher” they do not understand much, it seems, and the characters themselves. Evil is downright elusive, because you need to look for it in the past, in the business schemes of the dashing nineties, but the imperturbable investigator and her assistant with superpowers are constantly distracted by either new atrocities or a samurai sword in the form of evidence.
In fact, it turned out to be a series with well-chosen actors and a picture that is not very typical in the best sense for federal prime time. But the significance of what is happening is still confusing. There is a suspicion that the authors are clearly counting on the second season, because for the sixteen episodes of the first, the characters in their leisurely dialogues have not advanced far. But if all the events shown have become just a seed for something more, then only the audience, hopelessly in love with series in which everything is too confusing, could impress.
