The Ministry of Digital Development has prepared a draft law on turnover fines for businesses for leaking personal data of Russians. The fine for the first violation will be from 5 to 10 million rubles, for the second violation – up to 3% of the turnover. This was announced by Senator and Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy under the Federation Council Artem Sheikin.
“For such leaks, which, unfortunately, we often hear about when more than 100,000 lines are leaked, according to the bill developed by the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation, fines are provided for legal entities from 5 to 10 million,” Mr. Sheikin said. “RIA News”.
Artem Sheikin added that for repeated leaks, the fine for companies will be from 0.1% to 3% of the company’s turnover over the past year. According to him, the law will be adopted this year. He noted that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to introduce a law on fines for data leaks by July 1.
In 2022, the number of hacker attacks and cases of data leakage of large companies’ clients increased in Russia. Earlier, Kommersant wrote that the Federal Antimonopoly Service and the Ministry of Digital Development are discussing the introduction of unscheduled inspections of IT companies if they leak data or violate antitrust laws.
