The Russian pharmaceutical market grew by 12% to RUB 2.57 trillion in 2022

The volume of the pharmaceutical market in 2022 amounted to 2.57 trillion rubles. As follows from the DSM Group presentation, this is 12% higher than the figure for the year before last. At the same time, according to Sergey Shulyak, CEO of this company, this segment showed weak dynamics. In particular, Yakov and Partners (ex-McKinsey) predicted sales growth to 2.8-2.9 trillion rubles.
The commercial (pharmacy) segment grew the most last year. At the end of 2022, its share in total sales amounted to 60.1%, having increased by 15% (to RUB 1.68 trillion in monetary terms). The year before last, the opposite situation was observed: the state segment (public procurement) showed a turnover growth of 33% by 2020, while sales in pharmacies increased only by 3.6%.
The development of pharmacy sales in 2022 was affected by an increase in the number of Russians who fell ill with omicron in January and February, follows from the presentation of the DSM Group. A few more reasons are the rush demand for medicines against the backdrop of the imposition of sanctions in March, as well as the worsening epidemiological situation for coronavirus in August and SARS in November and December. The number of pharmacies also increased, although earlier experts predicted the upcoming bankruptcies of a number of players. At the end of 2022, there were 69,477 of them (there were 65,577 a year earlier).
It also follows from the DSM Group presentation that by the end of 2022, the number of drug names in pharmacies has decreased by 10% (to 21,645 units). First of all, according to Shulyak, expensive drugs are leaving the retail segment, the cost and logistics of which have greatly increased in price. Such medicines include euro (175,993 rubles), tecentrik (171,190 rubles), kadsila (153,249 rubles), octagam (17,672 rubles), actinolysate (4,466 rubles), and so on.
True, they are still represented in the state segment, the expert noted. Medicines from the list of vital and essential medicines, whose cost price is higher than the maximum registered price, also disappear from pharmacies, he adds.
