The Russian market of online games in 2022 fell by 80% by 2021

According to the results of 2022, the official online games market in Russia, according to the preliminary assessment of ANO Tsifrovaya ekonomika, lost 80% of its volume, follows from the presentation presented today, March 21. At the end of 2021, the volume of the Russian online games market amounted to 99 billion rubles. But with a successful development of events, the market will begin to recover in the next two or three years, ANO believes: “This will be helped by the development of specialized education programs in game development and eSports, the development of Russian platforms, in particular VK Play, and government investment in content production.”
Thus, as part of the competition for the production of national content, the Internet Development Institute (IRI) planned to allocate less than 1 billion rubles for the gaming direction in 2022.
According to a Newzoo analyst report published in February, at the end of 2022, the global video game market showed a fall for the first time in several years. At the end of the year, the market volume amounted to $184.4 billion against $194.7 billion in 2021 (-4.31% year-on-year). At the same time, Newzoo predicts that growth will continue in the coming years: it is expected that in 2025 the volume will be $211.2 billion. Newzoo believes that game developers will change the approach to game commercialization by moving to a hybrid monetization model.
