The head of the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, considers it necessary to extend the ban on the import of Ukrainian grains and a number of other crops, which expires tomorrow, September 15. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku also expressed a desire to increase the transportation of Ukrainian grain through the country.
When asked what measures Romania will take if the European Commission does not extend the ban, Mr. Barbu replied: “Let’s wait for the decision.” “I am confident that we will take the best measures, both economic and financial, regulations, to support and protect Romanian farmers,” he added (quoted by TASS).
Mr. Ciolacu said that Romania “should help Ukraine export grain.” To this end, he said, Romania has already invested “significant funds” in ports on the Danube and Constanta. “Over the next month we will try to increase the volume of traffic through Romania from 2 to 4 million tons,” the prime minister said in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Standard.
In the spring, Polish farmers staged protests against the supply of Ukrainian grain, explaining that local enterprises were losing profits because of this. The European Commission (EC) agreed with Poland to limit the export of agricultural products from Ukraine, but in the end only four types of grain crops (wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower) were banned. A ban on the import of Ukrainian grain crops was also introduced by Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Slovakia. President of Ukraine Zelensky threatened court when extending restrictions on grain imports.
