The Rolling Stones release first single from new album ‘Hackney Diamonds’

The Rolling Stones have released details of their 24th studio album. The special event dedicated to The Rolling Stones’ first studio album in 18 years with new songs lasted only half an hour. American comedian Jimmy Fallon was chosen as the host. Usually rock stars come to him on the air to talk about their new albums. But in this case, he was just a hired worker, which is an unprecedented thing for a TV presenter of his level. Rock legends can afford that luxury.

Living members of The Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were seated on stage. There was also the invisible presence of drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away last year. “He is always with us,” said Keith Richards, “and now he is sitting somewhere there, in the gallery.” Drums for most of the songs were recorded by new drummer Steve Jordan, whom Charlie Watts personally selected to replace him during his lifetime, but his playing is also on the album – in the songs “Live by the Sword” and “Mess It Up”. Moreover, Charlie Watts and bass guitarist Billy Wyman played in one of the songs, that is, The Rolling Stones sound there for the first time in decades in their classic line-up.

The 18-year hiatus between albums doesn’t mean that Hackney Diamonds has been in the works all this time. On the contrary, the album was recorded in record time. Recording began in December 2022, around Christmas, and was already over by Valentine’s Day. The link between the recording participants was producer Andrew Watt, known for his work with Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop and other stars of the first magnitude.

According to Mick Jagger, Hackney Diamonds is a stylistically very diverse album. The main desire of the “Rollings” during the work was formulated as follows: “record an album that we ourselves would like first of all.”

The music of The Rolling Stones is usually not very suitable for morning tea in the family circle, however, according to the musicians, “Hackney Diamonds” can be listened to at any time of the day.

At the online presentation of the album, the first single “Hackney Diamonds” “Angry” was presented. Keith Richards claims that despite the variety of styles and the presence of love ballads, anger is a feeling that unites all the songs on the album.

Thus, the variety of song material and the general feeling of anger are the main features of the album. During the Hackney Diamonds sessions, 23 songs were recorded, but 12 made it to the final cut.

At the presentation, Jimmy Fallon read out the questions sent by the fans, but the main intrigue of the album is featuring Paul McCartney in his record – so no one asked. But Lady Gaga was mentioned – her voice sounds in the song “Sweet Sounds of Heaven”. They also didn’t talk about how the group’s logo with its tongue hanging out was transformed. It’s a pity.

Among others, the Russian digital artist Brickspacer (Stepan Khristoforov) worked on the new visual style of The Rolling Stones, which in the current political environment for many domestic music lovers may well become a matter of special pride.

In the Angry video shown on Wednesday, its main character (played by White Lotus and Euphoria star Sidney Sweeney) rides in a convertible along a wide street lined with billboards featuring images of The Rolling Stones from different years. The Mickey Jaggers sing “Angry” and the girl in rocker leather enjoys life.

It is unlikely that The Rolling Stones would have called a comedian if it were not required to make the audience laugh. Both the audience and the musicians laughed non-stop – recalling early press conferences and incidents backstage at concerts, answering ridiculous questions from the Internet and singing together the song “Off the Hook”, which will soon turn 60 years old.
