The release of the second batch of water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant into the ocean has begun – Kommersant

Japanese agency Kyodo reports that experts have begun dumping into the ocean the second batch of water purified from radioactive substances from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant (NPP).

TEPCO, which is carrying out the work, assures that the water discharge will be carried out in accordance with safety requirements. It is reported that during the second phase of water discharge it is planned to discharge about 7.8 thousand tons in volumes not exceeding 500 tons per day.

As part of the first stage of discharge, which ended on September 11 of this year, about 7.8 thousand tons of water were drained from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. TEPCO draws attention to the fact that there are no serious environmental or other problems due to the first stage of water discharge from no station was recorded. The release of the second batch of water is expected to last, like the first, for 17 days.

Previously, former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on environmental issues Sergei Ivanov declaredthat the risks of increasing tritium levels in Russian waters after the start of water discharge from the Japanese Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant theoretically exist, but so far there are no such signs.

The accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant occurred in 2011. The water used to cool the reactors was stored in tanks after purification. On August 24, 2023, the Japanese company Tokyo Electric Power began discharging water purified from radioactive substances from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean. The decision was approved by the IAEA, but it still caused protests in Japan, including in the fishing industry. China opposed the release of water. Beijing has banned the import of Japanese fish and seafood.
