The Pushkin Institute named “heritage” as the word of the year

The A. S. Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language named “heritage” as the word of the year, informed university press office. The institute noted that they intentionally excluded words related to political and military topics from the sample, “in order to find a word with a positive sound and public support.”

“We live in a very turbulent time, and right now it seems important to rethink the historical past, with all the mistakes and achievements, in order to understand the path we should follow. It is no coincidence that the outgoing year was declared the Year of the Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia,” the Pushkin Institute said.

Wordstat.yandex, the Medialogy analytics system and the Integrum database were used as sources of statistical information. According to Medialogia, in 2022, 1,071,509 messages containing the word “heritage” were published. Wordstat in the first positions shows such queries as “cultural heritage”, “object of heritage”, “heritage of Russia”, “world heritage”, “year of heritage”.

By versions British Oxford Dictionary, the word of 2022 was the expression “goblin mode” (goblin mode), according to versions Collins English Dictionary – “permacrisis”, created from the words “permanent” and “crisis”. In Germany, the word of the year was Zeitenwende, which translates as “change of eras”.

The Russian Language Institute named after A. S. Pushkin recognized “satellite” as the word of last year, in 2020 the words “self-isolation” and “zeroing” were recognized.
