Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov instructed regional prosecutors to check chicken egg producers. It has also been instructed to check retailers if the average retail price of chicken eggs in the region has increased by more than 40%.

“Prosecutors of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation have been instructed, in cooperation with antimonopoly and other authorized bodies, to carry out supervisory inspections of the activities of producers of chicken eggs and retailers of these goods, the average retail price of which has increased by more than 40% over the year,” the department reported in Telegram.

This decision was made at a meeting of the expert group on countering cartels with the participation of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Federal Antimonopoly Service, the Russian Poultry Union and the Association of Retail Trade Companies.

Eggs are a socially important product, the cost of which is controlled by the authorities. If a product from the list rises in price by more than 10% (except for seasonal factors) for 60 days in a row, maximum retail prices are set for it for up to 90 days. Over the past few months, egg prices have been rising at an accelerated pace. According to Rosstat, in the week from November 14 to November 20, eggs rose in price by 4.5%. In October, retail chicken eggs became more expensive on average across all regions by 23.9% compared to October last. At the same time, in 14 regions, eggs rose in price by 20.1–39.9%. FAS suggested chains to limit markups on eggs to 5% until March 2024.
