The Prime Minister of Japan announced the importance of the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects for the country’s energy security

The Japanese authorities consider the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects important for ensuring the country’s energy security, said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. At the same time, he promised that Tokyo continued to impose anti-Russian sanctions and wants to make them more effective.

According to Mr. Kishida, when developing sanctions, Japan takes into account what the consequences for its citizens, businesses and the global community may be. He explained that the sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation lead to the withdrawal of foreign companies from the country, the disruption of supply chains, and the reduction in production “in industries dependent on imports, such as the automotive industry.”

The Prime Minister noted that the Japanese authorities will continue to take measures to ensure stable supplies of energy resources to their country. “The Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects are important for Japan’s energy security,” Fumio Kishida said at a meeting of the budget commission of the lower house of parliament (quoted by TASS).

Russian President Vladimir Putin October 7 signed decree on the creation of the Sakhalin-1 operator. All rights and obligations of the current operator Exxon Neftegas Limited will be transferred to the organization. Foreign participants in Sakhalin-1 must confirm their agreement to take ownership of a proportional share in the new operator within a month. In addition to ExxonMobil (30%), Japanese Sodeco (30%) and Indian ONGC (20%) own shares in the project. As Kommersant found out, the reason for stopping production at Sakhalin-1 was Exxon’s refusal to ship oil to Sovcomflot tankers.
