Bulgaria has begun construction of a gas pipeline to Serbia, conceived to diversify supplies due to a decrease in gas imports from Russia. Its total length is 170 km. The project was launched by the presidents of Serbia and Bulgaria, Alexander Vucic and Rumen Radev.
The construction of the Nish-Dimitrovgrad gas pipeline began in the village of Kostinbrod near Sofia. 62 km of the gas pipeline will be laid on Bulgarian territory, 109 km on Serbian territory. Its capacity will exceed 1.8 billion cubic meters. m of gas per year. Serbia’s investments were estimated at €90 million, of which €49.6 million is provided by the European Union (EU), another €25 million was allocated on credit by the European Investment Bank.
The ceremony was also attended by the head of the EU Permanent Delegation to Serbia, Emmanuel Jofre, and members of the governments of the two countries. Mr. Vučić expressed hope that by the end of 2023, gas pipeline deliveries would go not only to Serbia and Bulgaria, but to all countries in the region.
“We were glad that for the first time we received more money from Europe: a €49 million grant and another €25 million is financed by the European Investment Bank. And then they say: Bulgarians €218 million! Rumen, we cannot even dream of getting so much for energy infrastructure. Maybe one day there will be something for us, the Serbs,” said Mr. Vučić (quoted by RIA Novosti).
Now Russia is the only supplier of natural gas to Serbia. Serbia’s current contract with Gazprom expires on May 31. As part of it, supplies of 6 million cubic meters were agreed. m of gas per day at $270 per 1,000 cubic meters. m. The authorities of Serbia expect to conclude the next contract for ten years.
