The premiere of “Brother 3” was canceled: the Ministry of Culture did not issue a rental certificate

The installation of an anatomical theater with troupes of women from director Valery Pereverzev impressed film officials

A strange film with the title “Brother 3” tied by the ears by Valery Pereverzev was denied a distribution certificate. Producer Vladislav Pasternak announced this on the day of the supposed premiere, which will not take place.

The film was created without government support. The Ministry of Culture has not yet reported the reasons for the refusal to issue a rental certificate. They promise to give clarifications later.

As soon as this project appeared, it began to be accompanied by comments that it had nothing to do with Alexei Balabanov’s duology “Brother” and “Brother 2”. Why then exploit a brand that does not belong to you?

The director of “Brother 3” is an artist, author of installations, creator of private museums, screenwriter, director Valery Pereverzev. He directed the films “Panopticon: Prison on the Island”, “Barbara”, “Portrait of the Executioner”, “Bluebeard’s Five: Islands of Death”. Once upon a time, the producer of Balabanov’s dilogy, Sergei Selyanov, said that “Brother 2” is a comedy, but many did not understand this. The authors of the new opus came up with the slogan: “Comedy is when it’s not funny.”

Valery Pereverzev set out to “teach the viewer to formulate his memories not in numbers, dates and objects, but in sensations, smells, tears, in strong depth, to teach him to package his memories, his life, in his feelings as loved ones, his feelings for his family places, small houses, seemingly insignificant objects, natural phenomena, microscopic: a stream, a bush, grass, sunset light, lamplight.”

The action of his crime drama (or is it a comedy?) takes place in a city that is not on the map, but it exists in the artist’s head. Filming took place in the director’s hometown – Tambov. The main characters are a couple of loser bandits, a general’s daughter who falls in love with a street artist. As the director himself says, this is the story of a little artist, which gives you the opportunity to look into his head. “Beautiful morning shots are combined with an installation of an anatomical theater and the corpses of women, a scene with a stupid and funny robber flows into a deadly chase, against the background of which a nuclear explosion, a dream within a dream is the main leitmotif of this film,” comments Valery Pereverzev.

The general was played by American actor Eric Roberts. The film starred the twins Vladimir and Yuri Torsuev, familiar to viewers from the film “The Adventures of Electronics,” as well as the Frenchman Olivier Siou, the Australian actor with Greek roots Costas Mandylor, debutante Alexandra Voznesenskaya, David Nuriev, aka Ptah.

The world premiere of “Brother” by Alexei Balabanov took place on May 17, 1997 at the Cannes Film Festival. “Brother 2” was released in 2000. When it became known about the appearance of “Brother 3,” which has nothing to do with Balabanov’s famous dilogy, Viktor Sukhorukov told MK that he himself persuaded Alexei Balabanov to complete the trilogy. He came to him for his birthday and said: “Take it off! If the film doesn’t work out, to hell with it, but you’ll earn millions and make your own movie.” Balabanov replied: “I don’t know this time. Let whoever wants to do it. But I won’t do that.” Sergei Bodrov was no longer in the world by that time. He died with the film crew of the film “The Messenger” in the Karmadon Gorge in September 2002. Balabanov did not accept Viktor Sukhorukov’s fantastic ideas.
